If contrary evidence reinforces wrongful original belief should the atheist implore faith?

Studies show that when beliefs are deeply held, and if new and valid evidence that undermines this belief is introduced, the normal human response is to hold to the original belief with much more tenacity while inventing creative reasons why the valid evidence is actually invalid. The smarter the individual, the more elaborate the reason for ignoring the actual valid evidence. (the backfire effect)
