Why do people make a big deal out of women like Michelle Obama & Cindy McCain?

All during the election, my dad would complain every time Cindy McCain would show up on t.v. I would always argue(and still do argue) that she's irrelevant & that no one should pay any attention to her. I feel the same way about Michelle Obama. She's not gonna be in the Presidential cabinet & she's not making any important decisions, so why does anyone care about her?
