Why does my laptop computer cd rom drive read aol and music cd's but not dvd or game cd's?

I have a laptop computer with a compaq cd rom sn 124 , microsoft xp professional version 2002 service pack 3 intel celeron cpu 2.40ghz, 2.39 ghz 192 mb or ram it reads aol and music cd's but not game or DVD's how come and how do I fix this?
