How do you know if you have enough grease in a tie rod? Recently did 97 Astro but rubber doesn't seem firm

The rubber where you put grease is not full and firm like the old tie rods i put on. i pumped grease in and some came out or oosed out but rubber boots still does not seem firm. Now i get noise when making a sharp turn when before I did not. Thanks
