Do straight guys compliment shoes?

there was a group of 3 guys who got in the elevator on my way back from lunch and one started complimenting my shoes and asking questions about them (they are dress shoes made by puma so they are kind of weird). they were all big guys and none had any of the generalized "gay" characteristics. just wondering was that flirting? what do you think?
