Why did he do this????

okay well a friend of mine and i both got in a argument, and when we discussed it and talked everything out i asked him if he still wanted to be friends, i also told him to be brutally honest and he says, "but i dont not want to be friends" i took that as we could continue being friends, on saturday we talked and sunday i mentioned a chapter of a video game im stuck on and he didnt reply, i decided he was busy or something, today i sign on, feeling happier than i ever had in a long time and a few minutes later my friend mentions him, and i look at my buddylist and see that hes not online. so then i create a new sn and see for myself and there he is online. this really really upset me and ruined my day, but now i completely and honestly do NOT know what to do, and if this means we can never be friends again. btw- we didnt talk at all at school today.
