Density of sugar solution?

In my chemistry lab we were told that all sugar in our solution must be be completely dissolved in order to determine the solution density (no solid left on the bottom of the flask). Why does it matter if any of the sugar is dissolved at all? I fail to see how a balance would notice the difference.
